Your spindles are one of the most important parts of your bus as regards to safety. Worn spindles are a danger to yourself and to others and will certainly mean an MOT failure.
Unlike some suppliers, every spindle we sell has had the king pins machined and new king pin bushes fitted as standard. None are left as “looking all right” so you can be sure what you’ll be getting will match original factory fit and quality. We have had new thrust washers, which are not available to buy, machined to original spec but in a modern harder wearing material. New seals, grease nipples and king pin retaining bolts are also fitted as standard. Fitting instructions are supplied that explain simply how to reinstall them and shim them correctly.

We offer a two year warranty against faulty workmanship on all our rebuilt spindles. If you grease them once a year, they should last you for many years. If you dont they wont and they will not be covered under our warranty. The only reason a bush will fail in a short period of time is lack of grease. When you have fitted our spindles back on your bus, pump them full of grease untill you see it emerging from the seals. Grease at least once if not twice a year.

Spindles are not sold on an outright or exchange basis, but are machined for you to order. This service normally takes 10-14 days.
The reason for doing this is that we have had experience of sending a perfect set of spindles off to be “dropped” and then receiving back a set that was exchanged from someone else and were of much lower quality. You will get the set you send us returned to you not someone else’s junk.

POSSIBLE KING PIN PROBLEMS ?

It is possible that when we have pressed your spindles apart and inspected the king pins, that they are rusted or worn to a depth that is beyond machining limits. If this is the case, we will call and inform you that they are unservicable. At this point there are two options. The first is to fit new King pins if they are available. (see individual spindle parts prices ). Supply is often patchy to say the least. The second and more expensive way, is to have your existing link pins hot metal sprayed and precission ground. This is the same process used for building up metal wear on vintage car crankshafts when a new part is unavailable. It is expensive as it is a specialised process and when complete, the new surface cannot be machined in a lathe as it is two hard and needs to be precission ground. If you need to use this process we have to charge an additional £50 per spindle. The good news is that we only have to do this probably one in twenty spindles. This service can be helpful if you have a Barn Door and spares are even harder to come up with. Spindles that require this service are still covered by our 2 year warranty but once more, if greased regularly should last many many years.

A NOTE ON LINK PINS

Link pins are not included in the spindle rebuild as not everybody needs them. They are available if requested at additional cost. We will normally advise you if yours need replacing. If you purcase a new link pin kit from us, we will press out your old outer sleeves and install the new ones for you free of charge. Without wishing to sound like we are just after a sale, we would recomend that if you have gone to the trouble and expense of having your king pins /spindles rebuilt, that you install new link pins. Unless they are only a few years old and have been greased regularly, they normally have had it. Luckily with the later models (64-67), new link pin kits are now available at areasonable price. Early buses (55-63) are not so lucky as these sets are expensive but at least are now available and are of excellent quality. All link pin kits include outer sleeves, needle rollers and pins. As with your king pins, they live or die with or without grease ! Grease your link pins when you do your king pins at least once a year.

DAVES FRONT END TIP

We all live in fear of taking a car into a garage thinking it just needs a set of £20 brake pads and comming out with a £1000 bill, well sit down and be prepared.

From experience I know that normally if one major part is badly worn on your front end, so will most of the other parts. If you have been driving yous bus a while and have replaced other front end parts recently, you may get away with replacing the next link in the chain. If you have just bought a bus thats been static for decades or has a mind of its own when driven, nows the time to sit down ! The bottom line is that you may not notice a worthwhile improvement unless you replace all front end steering parts. Unless you are very lucky, this would include your steering box. If your steering box is worn and has a lot of travel, rebuilding spindles may help slightly but not improve the steering of your bus. Changing the steering box to rack and pinion will make a massive difference to going down the road but. you will not get the full benefit if your king and link pins are worn out. Bottom line is if you are doing a complete rebuild replace everything or you will always have a problem. Dont forget your tie rods and central steering pin. At least they are not too expensive. Remember, if you only have a limited budget, there is no point in doing the body work first. Your life is not dependant on a shiney paint job. A powerfull engine will not stop you from drifting across the road. My advice is Steering, Suspension , Brakes and drivetrain first. Shiny bits last.
